In the Valley of the Shadow
Sunday at 11 in the Church Sanctuary
sermon by Rev. Gregory Stewart
Hanukkah begins Friday evening at sundown
(on the twenty-fifth day of Kislev, according
to the Jewish calendar). It commemorates the
rebuilding of the holy temple at Jerusalem
during the Maccabean revolt, 2nd century BCE.
In defense of their faith, the Maccabeans
entered what Psalm 23 calls "the valley of
the shadow of death."
We'll look at this beloved Psalm —
perhaps the best known passage in the Jewish
Bible — and explore what it means to us
today, both as literature and as sacred text.
If you find yourself "in the valley of the
shadow" this holiday season, then you'll find
hope in these words of ancient wisdom.
Joining me on the pulpit will be Pastoral
Care Minister Rev. Fred Rabidoux,
Community Minister Rev. Alyson Jacks,
Worship Associates Claire Weber and
Antonia Porter, and Trustee Bill
Wise.
The choir will minister in music with
Hnaerot Halalu, a song for Hanukkah,
along with Bobby McFerrin's masterful setting
of the twenty-third Psalm.
Please make it a point to bring a friend to
church with you during the month of December
to experience our unique liberal religious
approach to the holidays and holy days of our
times.

Starr King Returns to California
See the Sacramento Exhibition with other Community Members
The statue of Rev. Thomas Starr King
formerly in Statuary Hall in Washington D.C.,
was installed last week in Sacramento's
Capitol Park in the Civil War Grove.
Rev. King, former minister of this Society,
helped keep California in the Union during
the Civil War.
Rev. Rebecca Parker, president of Starr King
School of Ministry, spoke at the dedication

it from the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary
Hall and replace it with a bronze of former
President Ronald Reagan.
An exhibit detailing King's efforts for the
Union and the nascent Red Cross is on display
at the Capitol through June 30. If you'd like
to join other community members in a carpool
to see the exhibit in Sacramento on
Wednesday, December 30 (or other dates to be
determined), please contact the

Love is the Spirit of this Church
Every week the Congregation affirms:
Love is the spirit of this church
And Service is its prayer
Worship Associate Stephen Schwichow
explored what those words mean to him in the
Credo delivered during the 11 am service last
week.
Stephen's journey of prayer and service took
him from childhood prayers with his
grandmother to his stay with Sister Sheila
and the other nuns of the Thabong Community
outside Johannesburg, South Africa.
A Very Fair Faire Market
There was no 2009 "Holiday Faire."
Instead, there was a lot of fun, warmth, food,
and community around the church last week as
the Congregation celebrated the holidays with
a Holiday Market.
Photographers John Steele and
Sonnie Willis (whose work is shown at
left) snapped memories of the people and
craft on display. "Thank you!" to both of
them for sharing their visual art.
