Same-Sex Weddings Are Part of our Congregation's History
Members Wed in Church Sanctuary
Photo by We Are Family Photo
We believe in committed love. Our church Sanctuary, ministers, and reception halls are available to all couples for weddings.
See pictures and information about our wedding services and facilities.
We invite couples considering marriage or a committment ceremony to contact facilities coordinator Jay Roller at 415.776.4580 extension 202 to talk about your plans.
We Marry All Loving Couples
The ministers of this Society have been uniting all loving couples for over 40 years. Since the early 1960's our clergy and Members have consistently welcomed same-sex and opposite-sex partners into our liberal religious community.
Church Weddings for Gays and Lesbians
Members and their families pose for a wedding memory in the church courtyard.
We will continue to celebrate this tradition. While currently we cannot legally marry same sex couples, we continue to bless their unions and are hopeful that we will be able to resume legally recognized weddings after the California Supreme Court rules on the challenge to Proposition 8 (expected to be decided in June 2009).
Our Membership has repeatedly taken a moral stand for marriage equality.
- In 2004 we hosted An Evening of Equality... for a Lifetime of Rights which raised funds and awareness for the equality fight.
- We invited Unitarian Universalist Association President Rev. William Sinkford to our pulpit where he joined in the call for for civil rights.
- In 2007 the Membership reaffirmed its support for legal marriage equality. We unanimously authorized ongoing action to support and advocate for all couples to be treated equally under the law.
The Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations (UUA ) has been just as adamant in the support for marriage equality. Throughout the country, Unitarian Universalists embrace both same-sex and different-sex couples. Allowing all loving couples the right to marry isn't just a San Francisco issue — it is denomination policy.
We are very happy to be able to add this statement to our spiritual blessings.
Stillman Stewart and The Rev. Greg Stewart
Stillman Stewart and the Reverend Gregory Stewart have been a couple since 1980. They were legally married during the worship service Sunday, November 2, 2008, 28 years into their relationship.
The Stewarts' marriage was witnessed by their five sons and by over 500 members of the Congregation and friends. California State Senator Mark Leno and the Reverend Dr. Dorsey Blake officiated at the ceremony.
Their wedding ceremony is commemorated in the Flame, November 6, 2008 issue (2nd article).
Special Events of June 17, 2008
The Society celebrated and cheered the couples who picked up marriage licenses and wed at City Hall Tuesday, June 17th.
Wedding Gifts As Couples Wed at City Hall
Clergy and lay members of the of our Society gathered starting at 8 am to deliver wedding (CUP)cakes and other gifts to those waiting in line at City Hall on this historic day.
We created a Wedding Festival on the grass with music, decorations, and flowers.
In clerical robes and in street clothes we gave witness to the religious imperative to celebrate love without judgment and faith without limits.
Members Met in 1978, Marry June 17, 2008
Don Williams and David Jones met in 1978. This photo shows them that year in San Francisco.
On June 17, 2008 – 30 years later – they legally married.
When they came out of the clerk's office, Senior Minister Rev. Gregory Stewart married them at City Hall in a public ceremony held in front of a bust of Harvey Milk.
Over 100 members of the community in witnessed the marriage and cheered!
After the ceremony and media interviews, the wedding party moved the celebration to the plaza across the street. A rainbow-colored wedding cake, donated by Little Lover's Fine Cupcakes of Livermore , topped off the celebration.
Throughout the day the congration gave religious witness to the cause of marriage equality.
On the Sunday before their marriage, the story of Don and David's up-coming wedding opened the 5 pm newscast on KTVU-Channel 2 .
Society members proclaimed our inclusive vision on NPR radio, Univision Channel 14, an Associated Press dispatch , a Bay Guardian blog , and in theNew York Times .
